Abstract

The frequency of ventral hernias after laparotomy reaches 10-20%. In modern herniology, there is no single generally accepted definition of «large ventral hernia». Most authors believe that the criteria include: the width of the hernial gate ≥10 cm (less often ≥12-15 cm), the defect area ≥10-20 cm2 (according to CT data), the loss of the «domain» of the abdominal cavity – the volume of the hernial sac >20-25% of the volume of the free abdominal cavity. Large hernias are often classified as complex, which implies multiple recurrences, infected implants, concomitant laparostomies, obesity, scarring, and adhesions.
The article presents a clinical case of a patient who underwent surgery for a large postoperative ventral hernia with a favorable outcome.
