Abstract
The appeal to this topic is due to the possibility of using the example of Gorny Altai, which is distinguished by its originality, to determine the influence of social conditions on the formation of such a social institution as medicine. The article examines the process of the emergence of the health care system, and also shows the role and place of traditional medicine in it. In the course of the study, factors were identified that influenced the preservation of the ethnic group, and reactive and protective-compensatory mechanisms that arise in the process of social relations that were associated with ensuring the health of the indigenous population of Gorny Altai were also clarified.
