LACTATION DOMINANCE AND THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE ABOUT BREASTFEEDING AMONG HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS: A COMPARATIVE CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY OVER A 20-YEAR PERIOD

Abstract
The aim of the study is a comparative analysis of changes in the level of knowledge of high school girls about BF over 20 years and identification of predictors of the likelihood of girls planning to breastfeed their future child.
Materials and methods. The study included 15-year-old schoolgirls from two schools in Novokuznetsk, surveyed in 2004 (n = 253) and 2024 (n = 165). Comparative analysis, multivariate regression and construction of decision trees were used.
Results. The final multivariate model of 31 predictors included 5 statistically significant ones: information about BF from parents (AOR 1.81 [1.12; 2.91]); girls' knowledge that breast milk is optimal nutrition for an infant (AOR 2.20 [1.12; 4.32]); knowledge of the benefits of BF for the child (AOR 2.84 [1.73; 4.66]) and mother (AOR 3.59 [1.89; 6.82]); understanding of the need to teach the basics of BF to expectant mothers (AOR 2.93 [1.66; 5.16]). A decision tree was constructed based on the data obtained.
Conclusion. To increase the likelihood of girls planning BF in the future, it is necessary to lay the foundations in the family, form the perception of BF as a norm for infant nutrition, and an understanding of the benefits for the child and mother.
