Abstract

The aim of the research – the study of the quality of life (QOL) of primary school students who returned to education in the early period of convalescence of acute respiratory viral infection (ARVI).

Materials and methods. The quality of life was assessed using the PedsQL 4.0TM questionnaire. The indices of children with acute respiratory viral infections (n = 367) were compared with those before the disease and with the data of children who did not have acute respiratory viral infections (n = 184). The data were evaluated in dynamics at the 1st, 2nd week, 1, 2 and 3 months after the children returned to school; for schoolchildren with different academic performance.

Results. After acute respiratory viral infections, the most negative shifts in QOL indicators occurred in relation to school (p<0.01), emotional and physical functioning (p < 0.05). The maximum decrease on the scale of school functioning was demonstrated by children with «good» and «satisfactory» academic performance. Emotional and physical functioning decreased to a greater extent in the group of excellent students. Academic performance was restored after 3 months.

Conclusion. Within 2 months after the return of SARS convalescent children to school, they experience a decrease in their quality of life. School, emotional, and physical functioning decrease most significantly.
