Abstract

Subject of study. Arterial hypertension and other cardiovascular risk factors in students of medical universities.

Aim – to determine incidence of arterial hypertension and modifiable cardiovascular risk factors in students of medical university.

Methods. The study included 146 students of KemSMU, as well as 67 students of SamSMU who were surveyed during May 1-10, 2017 within the framework of the international project «MAY MEASUREMENT MONTH 2017 (MMM17)» using a standard questionnaire supplemented with a developed questionnaire including questions about the daily consumption of coffee and energy drinks, the amount of vegetables and fruits consumed, salt, physical activity level and night duty as paramedical personnel. All students underwent a three-fold measurement of blood pressure (BP) after 5 minutes of rest sitting.

Results. The frequency of arterial hypertension among KemSMU students at the age of 22.04 ± 1.8 years is 4.1 %, among the SamSMU students at the age of 21.2 ± 0.73 years – 1.5 %. Individuals with arterial hypertension – more often men gender who regularly drink coffee. Male students have a higher incidence of several risk factors than female students. The high frequency of tabacco smoking among medical students (13 % – KemSMU, 7.5 % – SamSMU) was detected, while 31.6 % of all smokers began to smoke during their studies.

Conclusions. The most common risk factors determined among students were smoking, increased intake of salt. Young men significantly more often demonstrated the presence of risk factors than women of similar age.
